Today we’re reviewing, discussing, and giving away a copy of Mary’s Son by Darryl Nyznyk. Keep reading to learn how you can win a free copy.
Mary’s Son is a modern-day Christmas tale first told by author Darryl Nyznyk in front of the fireplace during his daughter’s sleep-over birthday party. It’s the story of two angry young people bent on their own destruction, who are visited by a mysterious old man just before Christmas. He tries in vain to help them until, in desperation, he whisks them back in time to witness the first Christmas. They learn the real meaning of both Christmas and their own lives.
It’s a heart-warming, family friendly story along the lines of Miracle on 34th Street, It’s a Wonderful Life and Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol. It’s no stretch to imagine it being made into a movie some day.

My favourite story besides the obvious would be those from Max Lucado. His childrens stories… The Christmas Candle is perhaps the best.
Thanks Ed. I’m not familiar with that one. I’ll check it out.
My favourite Christmas story is the great classical: A Christmas Caroll. twitter account: @monycrapax
As Ed said, besides the obvious, I have always been partial to White Christmas. I guess it’s that part of the story where so many are willing to sacrifice to honor a man who had been so important in their lives.
Jim, I’ve never seen that movie. Thanks for recommending it.
It’s a Wonderful Life has to be number 1. Love the way George’s friends came to support him at the end of the movie.
Charlie Brown’s Christmas would make a close second. Even in the 1960s, Charles Schulz noted the problem with commercializing Christmas.
Rich, you’re right, that’s amazing that Shultz thought Christmas was becoming too commercial 46 years ago. I wonder what he’d think now.
BTW, I’ll be spending a good bit of Christmas right down the road from you at my parents’ house in the River Hills community.
My favorite Christmas story is the Biblical account of Emmanuel, God with us.
Moving (way) beyond that, I love to watch Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer on TV every year! What a great tale of friends giving us the courage to be who we are.
Favorite is still “its a wonderful life ” i watch it faithfully every year as it doesn’t feel like Christmas without it . Shows me that Christmas is about Christ and how important it is to leave this world some day giving more than you took . I will be 60 years young Christmas Eve .
Early happy birthday wishes to you, John. My 2 brothers’ birthdays are Dec 23 and Dec 25, and for many years we have celebrated them together on 24th after Christmas Eve services.
I love The Muppet Christmas Carol (http://youtu.be/O9FK3EJJyZc), a film adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

I am rather partial to the Grinch Christmas story. twitter @WayneHurlbert
Wayne – another reason why I’m glad you’re in my world!
It’s a Wonderful Life captures so many of those good feelings associated with Christmas. But I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention the Toy Story that seems to run 24 hours straight during the holidays. “You’ll shoot you eye out kid.” Hilarious! @danajlange
Hey Dana, I think you mean A Christmas Story. Have you seen they’ve made it into a musical?
There are so many great Christmas stories, but my grandson and I have spent many happy times watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas! by Dr. Seuss
@DL101
Hey Paul – yes, my first favorite Christmas story is the original, as found in the New Testament.
After that, though, I’ve always loved “It’s A Wonderful Life”. It and “Miracle on 34th Street” both have some great morals to their stories, are uplifting & inspiring.
During the Christmas Season, I’ve always watched “The Sounds of Music”, too. It’s a tradition 🙂 Merry Christmas!
Cole, that’s interesting. When I asked my wife this question yesterday she mentioned The Sound of Music. I don’t think the movie itself has anything to do with Christmas but it has become a tradition for some TV networks to show the movie on or around Christmas, so it’s become associated with Christmas for many.
The Seuss original “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and the rarely seen Muppet’s “Emmett Otter’s Jug Band Christmas”. Both have an internal message of love.
clearly Dr Seuss story is the winner.
My all time favorite remains the story of the little drummer boy.
I think my second favorite would have to be ‘a visit from st Nicholas’ – I used to recite it so many times that by the time each of my daughters was 2, they were able to recite it with me, so many fond memories of each of when they were young. Even now, with them grown, if I start off ’twas the night before Christmas…’ they seem programmed to continue the poem. Maybe it’s the tradition more than the story that makes it a favorite, but isn’t that what much of Christmas is about? 🙂
My favorite Christmas story (aside from the biblical account) has to be….Elf! Yes, I know, very deep! I love the silliness of it and the story of a son coming home. The Christmas “spirit” was gone because people no longer believed. Once that belief was restored, all was well!
I shared on Twitter through @NCMissionsMom
Well, if we’re going that route, I would have to put Christmas Vacation at the top of my list. 😀
Thanks to all of you who shared your favorite Christmas story in a comment; I’m excited to check out some new ones I hadn’t heard of before! And thanks to everyone who shared this post on Facebook and Twitter!
And now the moment you’ve all been waiting for…
The randomly selected winner of a free copy of Mary’s Son is…
Ed Nix aka @ametsound! Congrats Ed!
If you didn’t win, you can still buy a hard copy on Amazon and receive it before Christmas or get the Kindle Edition delivered to you in seconds for only $0.99.
Like the two main characters in the book, I hope you all discover both the meaning of Christmas and your own purpose in Jesus this Christmas!
Congrats Ed!
Paul, looks like a great book. Thanks so much for letting us all be part of the fun 🙂
Hey there! This is wonderful and should spread! I know it’s cliche, but I think “It’s a Wonderful Life” is my all-time favorite, and maybe Miracle on 34th Street!
