They say that the doctrine of an eternal burning hell-fire is the doctrine that's created the most atheists out there. I tend to agree. This is something that Christianity has misunderstood for the longest time and is a teaching that came into the catholic (and thereby into most other churches) via greek mythology. The ancient Jews never had this concept of eternal hellfire. Check out this resource.
