Hi Paul,
I posted this on Shaun's page as well, but think it bears re-posting here.
My pastor preached on this very question yesterday...

Many struggle with the question, "If God is "love", how can he send someone to an eternal hell?" But, when we compare the magnitude of his holiness to the magnitude of our sin, the real question should be; "How does such a perfect, holy, and just God allow anyone into heaven?" - The answer, God doesn't send anybody to hell, we literally have to walk over his dead body to get there.

Here is the entire podcast of the message... I hope you will check it out. It's powerful.

Thanks Kathy! Yes, being with God in heaven is just as much a choice as being with God here on earth.

Something my pastor says, very much in my paraphrase & understanding, is that God loves us more than we can know or imagine. Because of this great love, He gave us free will and at the end of our lives, He allows us exactly what it is that we have CHOSEN to do: we either get to be with Him, or live without Him (eternally removed from God, hell). It's our choice that God is honoring, not sending us away as punishment, He allows us our expressed desires, because He loves us. We get to live with the consequences. Our choice. (Found you from and also posted on Shaun's blog.)

I came over from Shaun Grove's blog. Great way of looking at and explaining what hell is. It IS a choice and for some reason, we choose it every day. Wow.

Hey Rodlie, thanks for the comment and the link. I don't agree with some of conclusions/interpretations in the article, but it's good to add another perspective to the conversation.

Hi there. They say that the doctrine of an eternal burning hell-fire is the doctrine that's created the most atheists out there. I tend to agree. This is something that Christianity has misunderstood for the longest time and is a teaching that came into the catholic (and thereby into most other churches) via greek mythology. The ancient Jews never had this concept of eternal hellfire. Check out this resource. It was very helpful for me to understand:

Check out this link: http://tr.im/yEOX

It really made a lot of sense to me when I first studied it.

Cheers.
